A USEFUL SELF-HYPNOSIS TECHNIQUE

I would like to share with you a technique for self-hypnosis that has proved useful to me over the years. In order for this technique to work, you have to be completely relaxed & to have switched off from what ever else is going on in the world at that moment, THIS IS THE HARDEST PART. I should know, as it took me several attempts before I managed it when I first tried it many years ago! With practice it does become easier! Don't be disheartened if at first attempt you don't succeed, try again later! Before beginning the process, make sure you are somewhere you wont be disturbed, ensure that no-one is likely to walk in & distract you. Lock the door, un-plug the phone - do whatever you need to do to ensure no distractions! Some people like to have soothing music / sounds of nature playing at a low volume to drown out any external noise, this is up to you, but I recommend you try the technique without this first!

 FIRST  STEP - RELAXATION

Lie or sit on a couch/ bed/ floor ( whatever you feel most comfortable with), your arms by your side. Close your eyes. Focus your attention on your breathing for a minute, taking slow, deep breaths, gently
& slowly inhaling & exhaling. After a minute or so, visualize a safe with a lock ( this is the mental image I create, please feel free to substitute it for something that feels more relevant to you ). This is where all your concious thoughts, worries, anxieties etc, go. Open up the safe ( or whatever you have substituted for it ), & then mentally picture putting all your worries/anxieties/whatever else that is occupying your mind into the safe. Don't just stuff them in there, take time to visualize each one going into the safe!
Now mentally lock the safe, make sure that it's secure - you can visualise heavy chains with numerous padlocks securing it if you want too! Visualize the safe rising up into the night sky, watch it getting smaller & smaller as it travels further & further away from you. See it getting smaller & smaller until it is but a twinkle in the night sky & see it disappear among the stars. Now, again focus on your breathing, slowly inhaling & exhaling. If any thoughts crop into your mind, respectively push them away & carry on concentrating on your breathing. After a minute or so, tell yourself that you are going to now relax your body & that as you do this you will become more & more relaxed. Focus on your head first. start with your forehead , tell it to relax, keep doing so until you can actually FEEL that it's relaxed.Once this is
done tell yourself again that as you travel down your body, you will get more & more relaxed. Now move to your eyes & repeat the process. Likewise for your ears etc. Really spend some time relaxing all your muscles. after finishing with your face, move down to your neck & repeat the process, as you finish relaxing each part, DON'T forget to tell yourself that as you are doing this you are getting more & more relaxed! Keep moving lower down your body, relaxing each part as you go. Ensure that you remember
to relax your arms & legs as well, right down to the last finger & toe! Once EVERY part of your body is relaxed, you can move on to the next stage.

 SELF-HYPNOSIS

By the time you have reached this stage, every part of your body should be totally relaxed & quite limp! Now, tell yourself that your right arm is getting lighter & lighter. Keep repeating this to yourself & actually FEEL it getting lighter.Now, tell youself that your arm is getting so light that it is starting to rise up into the air. Again, keep repeating that your arm is getting lighter & lighter & rising higher & higher. Feel it is lifting up into the air, higher & higher until you feel that it is fully extended. When you can feel that your arm is up in the air, it as at this stage that you can enter an afirmation if you want to, ( e.g. I will never feel like a cigarette again or whatever else is appropiate to you ). Keep repeating the afirmation for a few minutes. Now, back to that raised arm! It is now time to bring it back down to your side!   keep telling yourself that your arm is getting heavier & heavier & is lowering further & further down until it is back to its original position by your side. Again, it is important to actually feel this happening! It is now time for you to wake up!

 WAKENING YOURSELF

To wake yourself up, tell yourself that you are going to count  backwards from 10 to 1, & on reaching the number 1, you will be fully awake & feel totally refreashed. Inhale & exale slowly between numbers, e.g. "10", slow deep inhalation of breath, short pause, slow exhalation of breath, "9", slow inhalation, slow exhalation.....etc. When you reach the number "1", open your eyes & streatch or move your limbs if you feel the need to. It might be useful to you to record your feelings & thoughts in a diary at this moment, for future reference.

As I said before, this is a technique that has been useful to me. Hopefully it will be of use to you also! Unfortunately, some people seem to never really manage to complete the excercise fully. I can only hope that you are not one of those people! Also, some people get a good friend to read the commands out to them! A word of warning on that though, it would have to be someone you trust completely as the urge to make a mate do something stupid or seemingly funny while in a hpnotic state, may prove to be over whelming!!!! Be cautious!
